While We're on the Subject

Is it knit or knitted? The past tense of knit? I've seen it both ways and personally, I just can't wrap my head around knitted. Just sounds funny to me! I'm going to do some research on it {cough, cough**geek**cough, cough}, but in the mean time, give me your thoughts.

I can't either! Knit is a verb...I think EZ would agree with us, too.

Cybele:

Definitely knitted - but that's just going by intuition, same as you feel knitted doesn't sound right (to me 'I have knit that' doesn't sound right)
I'm a translator/proofreader and do a lot of language things by intuition - doesn't mean I'm always right! ;-)

I have more trouble with 'I'm a sewer/seamstress'....

there was this discussion on the knitty boards about 2 years ago and i while i think knitted is correct, i don't like it. so i say knit even in the past tense.

I accept both as valid, but usually use "knitted." For no reason, really, except that the "-ed" ending just feels right as a verb form. After I pet Chappy, I've patted him. After I've corrected an error, I've righted a wrong. Once I've left the rink, I've skated. Do I "ed" all my verbs? Not necessarily, but in this case, it just seems to fit.... for my tongue, anyway!

I think I use both when speaking, but I do think "knit" is likely correct? I'll be interested to see the results of your research.

Oh my! I've been trying to figure that out myself! Thanks so much for bringing it up. I teach English and Spanish and speak German with my German friends and others at work which really sucks up my brain cells, so this question has been driving me nuts. I personally say knit in the past tense but sooo many others say knitted. I think both ways are acceptable. I believe to have seen that in a dictionary somewhere. So, what did you find?

I prefer "knitted". As in "I knitted those socks". It sounds a little odd and stuttery, but I still prefer it over "I knit those socks", which sounds like I forgot to say the rest of the word. May be a personal preference kind of thing.
