The Price of Boredom

Boredom gets me in trouble a lot. My ADD, hypomanic personality requires that I be doing something all the time. I want to climb walls and pick imaginary bugs off my skin if my hands aren’t occupied. So, as you can imagine, this forced hiatus from knitting or anything fiber related (spinning being out of the question as well) has been pretty hard to take.

My best friend has kicked me to the curb in favor of married life (and I can't honestly say I blame her, because what is there more intoxicating than new love?), so what’s a girl to do?

I’ve taken to bug photography.

These little suckers have decimated the leaves of my cannas. With my luck they will be calling their little buddies and gunning for my wool stash next.

Please excuse the butt shot. With four dogs, it's virtually impossible to avoid.

I adopted a couple of puppies. The one on the left is Bébé. She came home with me from the shelter about a month after my mother died. She was in a cage in the cat room, starving, shivering and crying. They said she tested positive for Parvo and the previous owners didn’t want to mess with her. The timing being what it was, I couldn’t just leave her there to die, since all they had the ability to do was offer her food and water. The antibiotics and IV fluids required to keep her alive cost more than any pure bred, but as you can see, she is healthy and much loved.

The one on the right has no name. He came home with me because his previous owner just had a baby and didn’t have time for both. We haven’t named him yet because his personality is still developing, but I am leaning towards Darcy. He has green eyes (seriously; I’ve never seen a dog with green eyes before), and I've always imagined Mr. Darcy with green eyes.

So my dog total now stands at four, which puts me at serious risk of a husband total of zero. Serious trouble.

Given the choice between my dog and my X… the dog would win every time! Cute dogs and good on you for giving them a safe and loving home. I like the name Darcy too (I'm sure Mr. Darcy does have green eyes).

I totally get the hypomanic ADD thing by the way… that's what made me take up knitting in the first place. I needed something to do with my hands.

Beth:

I like the name Darcy. ;) Your dogs are really cute!

Terrisa:

Wow...I leave you alone for a while and what do you do? Adopt another dog! LOL! He's so cute!

I see I rated a subtle rant in your blog! I truly had no idea life would stay this busy. I kept thinking after the wedding everything would calm down and I'd go back to having lots of downtime like before, but everything is so different. I don't miss much about my pre-marriage life, but more time with you is definitely at the top of that short list! Don't give up on me! It's only been two months (today, as a matter of fact!). Love ya! T.

Man, Leah, that is one beautiful bug! Or to be more particular, that is one beautiful photo of a bug. What kind of camera do you have? I remember when you slipped and your other one broke.

Hope your tendonitis clears up really, really soon. That would be hard to take.

keri:

I hope your hand is feeling better soon - I'm feeling the same thing right now and I get so antsy when I can't knit!

The dogs are cuties! I love dogs, they're always happy to see you, everything you do is good enough and they keep you warm if you let them sleep on the bed. Sounds like a good deal to me! =)

Leah!
I must admit I had given up on you blogging. You seemed so sad and I thought you were done. I am so glad you are trying it again. I really like your blog and care about you even though I don't know you.
The bug photo is awesome! I think your dogs are adorable. I like the name Darcy...fits him!
Thanks for leaving me a comment! Made my day to see your name!
Marti

Congratulations on your new pups! Mr. Darcy looks all handsome and dashing as he should...

And Bébé is, well, a bebay! So precious!

Leah:

Interesting to see our names on each other's comments. I wonder if people think we are leaving ourselves comments? Ha.

I totally understand what you are talking about with the dogs and husbands. Husbands like being the center of your universe and do get jealous when there are other living beings that are using up some of their precious attention. It is definitely a balancing act.

I gave up dating/men/husbands about four years ago and just got my 9th dog, so you 'could' call me that crazy lady with 20 dogs soon. Actually, I had no plans to get #9, but she is the little dog whose previous owner did not get her leg fixed and she has had a broken leg since last April. What's a girl to do?

Dogs' love is unconditional. They are there for you when you need them. They are there for you when you don't too, LOL. I love my dogs and just hire someone when I need something fixed.

Please don't take me wrong....I am not a man hater. I do understand how great a relationship can be. I just got tired of men doing math and telling you how many dogs you can/can't have and always asking how much something cost. I do know there are the rare species out there that don't care how many dogs you have or how much something costs.

Now for that bug photo. That picture is amazing. The detail. The composition of this picture is very interesting, not just your average bug pic. You should develop this skill and do something with it. You have a definite talent.

Aw, I'm sure the same kind heart that lead you to bring those puppies home is the same kind heart that your husband fell in love with -- as much as he may moan and groan.

I love how big your heart is - those dogs are lucky that you came wandering by..
hint, hint.... stay away from the animal shelters - there's always cute stuff there :-)
hugs to you.

amanda:

love the bug shot! did you finally get your camera fixed AND get the macro lens? just lovely.

and i'm voting for darcy. it's a nice name. so much better than say...bubba ;o)

mia:
